Resources

Here is a collection of resources we have found so far for Haiti. We have researched them to the best of our abilities and believe them to be reliable. If you would like to add anything to this list please email Emily Kamischke at emkamisc@uncg.edu.

  • Operation ‘Spare Change’, January 19-25, 2010. Faculty will take an envelope or suitable container to each of their classes, every day, for the whole week. In their classes, they ask the students if they would like to donate any spare change they may have in their purses, pockets, or backpacks. If they do not have change that particular day, they can bring it to the next class meeting or donate it to each departmental secretary.  We then send the final donations to the American Red Cross.  The donations will be collected in the Dean’s office each day and Dr. Kathy Williams, Associate Dean, will deliver them to the Red Cross. Contact: Karen ‘Pea’ Poole at kapoole@uncg.edu
  • Zanmi UNCG-Partners In Health reports its Port-au-Prince clinical director , Louise Ivers, has appealed for assistance. The effort will work in concert with Partners in Health (www.pih.org), which has been doing medical work in Haiti for 25 years.  Contact Sarah Wagner at sewagner@uncg.edu or call at (336) 256-1189.
  • Impact a Child’s Life … Donate Here. ‘Freethekids.org’ is the official website of Theo’s Work, inc. A 501 *(c)3 registered non-profit organization. For every 5 ecards you send online, a donor will donate a chicken to the farm. Monetary donations can also be made online at this website: credit card “S.O.S. for Haiti page” via FreeTheKids.org: http://ftk.convio.net/SOSAlcatrazSwim. • Help Haiti: Drop the Debt. One way we can help Haitians build a better tomorrow is to convince global creditors to cancel Haiti’s $890 million international debt. Doing so will help make sure that every possible future dollar goes towards rebuilding a stronger Haiti, not to servicing old debts. Please sign the petition below to ask Haiti’s creditors to act quickly and cancel Haiti’s debts:

  • Presbyterian Disaster Assistance- The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is responding in Haiti. Gifts can also be made by phone at (800) 872-3283, and checks can be mailed to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.
  • Orphans International America reports that they have been able to make contact with their program director in the town of Jacmel, a city about 20 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince that houses OI’s hospitals and schools. Orphans International America is attempting to gather food, clean water and emergency medical supplies to Jacmel. You can contribute to them through PayPal at http://oihaiti.blogspot.com/
  • Operation USA is appealing for donations of funds from the public and corporate donations in bulk of health care materials, water purification supplies and food supplements which it will ship to the region from its base in the Port of Los Angeles.
